Ducks as Pets Cute as young little ducklings, ducks can be raised where they will always stay close to their home if you make your yard suit their needs. If you have a pond and get the ducks young enough they will see that pond as their pond and will be reluctant to leave. Be sure that you have the pond as best suited to them as you can. They will be tolerant to people if they are raised among them and can actually be friendly to kids if the kids are kind to them in return.

The Down Side of Having Ducks as Pets

The only down side to this pet is that they will leave feathers through the area and it isn’t always guaranteed that they will always stay. The feathers tend to get everywhere and make sure that you have a means to minimize mites. These are not good for the ducks and can potentially spread to your family. It sounds worse than it is, but they can really spread throughout your yard and house if not kept in check. It is also recommended to have a pump in the pond to cause circulation and to lessen the chance of getting other bad elements in the water (such as bacteria, mosquitoes, and waterbugs). These pests can turn a beautiful pond for the yard and ducks into a major pain.

Duck Food - What to Feed

Ducks can find food within the pond if it is self sufficient. It is more helpful if you fish to the pond as they will assist in the ecological setting of the pond and will help prevent certain pests from dominating the pond.

Other Characteristics of Ducks

If there are green pastures elsewhere they might migrate, so be sure to keep the pond in check and that the ducks have a steady supply. Plus, don’t be upset if you live in the north and you one day find the ducks gone, they will follow the wanderlust in their hearts when they have to migrate. Just remember that the pond is there and they will most likely come back.
