About Frogs

Frogs as PetsWatching them grow from tadpoles swirling in the water into the wet and air-breathing frogs is a sight to behold. Frog come in a huge variety of colors and sizes. Each type of frog is different from the next. They are not really suited as pets without a cage. They need a lot of water (unlike some toads), to keep them moist. Some species will disappear as they burrow in the mud, others will stay on the twigs you may have in the cage. You must do some research when picking a frog as a pet. For factors as size it will be, the frog’s diet, the frogs requirements for survival, and the frog’s activity.

Always remember that a frog is not going to be a low maintenance pet. The cage must be cleaned frequently due to the wet environment the frogs live in. It will help prevent bacteria from growing in the water and it will also help keep the waster to a minimum.

Food for Frogs

Frogs can eat worms, flying insects, fish, pinky mice, and mealworms. Mealworms are not the best choice as the frog doesn’t chew its food and can come prey to its own food. The larger frogs will eat pinky mice. Don’t base the frogs size on how they are when you get them, many species have been know to get much larger in time. Frogs can live for up to 15 years and are fairly easy to care for.

Frog Characteristics

Frogs can range in size and weight. Some have been known to fit in a thimble, and others have been difficult to hold one hand. These are good pets to have for educational purposes. Children can see a species that goes through change as profound as those of the butterfly. The only down side can be that frogs are not the most active of animals. They can stay in the same spot for hours. This means that you shouldn’t have to worry about getting a huge home for the frogs. They don’t normally move excessive.

Frog Habitat

Also remember to get a cage that will be suited to not just how big your frog is now but also how big the frog will eventually be. Another word of wisdom would be to make sure that the habitat in the frogs domain suites the type of frog you are getting, a tree frog with no branches is a bad combination.
