Giant Millipede

About Giant Millipedes

Giant Millipedes as PetsSome people think that bugs are nasty. Good thing - giant millipedes are in the arthropod family. They can grow to up to 8 inches, have been known to live for up to 5 years, and are among the more harmless of creatures. They are normally not the most active of creatures,. Don’t make a mistake thought they can scale the walls on almost anything and I there is no food in the cage they will begin to look for a new place to live. These Millipedes at also stronger than they seem, if you have a lid that is only resting on the cage and not secured you may run the risk of them getting out and living in your home. Unlike centipedes, millipedes are not poisonous. The millipede has no poison fangs and is a scavenger, not a predator like the centipede. Giant Millipede’s are typically black in color, but some have been seen as gray and even shaded with hints of blue or brown. These are rarities to find.

What do Giant Millipedes Eat?

Giant millipedes have the mouth structure that is similar to a grasshopper’s so they can only eat collared greens and flake fish food.

Giant Millipede Habitat

They need a clean cage and warmth. Lamps are the most ideal, but a heating rock can work too. When feeding collared greens it is ideal to remove the waste at the end of the day. That way there will be no rotting in the cage.

More Characteristics

They have good grip with their countless legs and can gain enough girth to equal that of a cigar. The move slowly and look intimidating, but are quite harmless. With these pets, bigger is not always better when buying them. The bigger ones have already reached adulthood and will not last long (perhaps 6 months at most).

Before you deem these arthropods as little monsters remember that they have the same mouth structure as a grasshopper. Their mouths are meant to grind and chew their foods only. The inner mouth (where the food is ground with the jaws angled vertically). You have no reason to fear these pets as they are slow, non poisonous, and quite harmless.
