About Snakes

Snakes as PetsLong and scaled, typically brown or green are the best ways to describe snakes. They are not for the weak of heart. Snakes are cold blooded and eat only other animals. They typically eat fish, rodents, and sometimes frogs and other reptiles. Most will recommend not to have a poisonous snake for a pet, but constrictors like the python are ideal. It would not be ideal to have large snakes as pets with children present in the household. Since pythons and boas crush and smother they prey, they can be a very bad influence to children. Some people can sit there and watch these miniature anacondas eat, and others can handle watching the life crushed out of the prey. That is why it is needed for people who are going to buy a snake need to consider it wisely. Snakes can stay in a large cage, but their cage will still need to be cleaned out when needed.

Feeding Snakes

Since snakes are cold blooded they need either a heating lamp or a heating rock in their cage to help digest the food they eat. Unlike most other animals, they don’t have to be fed as often.

They are also one of the less friendly of animals, but most of them are still fun to handle. The largest domestic snake is an anaconda that has reach over 20 feet in length. It eats 5 to 12 dead chickens per month and spends much of it’s time dormant.

Choosing a Snake for a Pet - Some Considerations

If you decide to get a snake, but not a boa or python, then study on the snake they are going to get. Always know the pros and cons of your prospective pet. If you can’t find any books and the store employee is at a loss, then expand to looking on the net. Snakes are not normally overly active, most snakes are rather passive throughout the day.
